“Rah Rah Radio,” the lead single from their forthcoming album,
sounds like the Rolling Stones hopped up on methamphetamines with a belly full
of Jack Daniels at the height of a three day bender. It’s pretty clear that
these five Aussies breathe fire and bleed whiskey.
Have you heard the new Filthy Boy tune yet? If not,
it’s time to get on it.
Those hilariously depraved chaps from London have done it
again, dropping another sexually unhinged single. “Jimmy Jammies” is dripping
with sleaze as singer Paraic Morrisey lustily whispers his wickedest geriatric desires over a heavy marching beat that never
quite reaches an explosive climax, instead it sort of fizzles and emits a quiet
a death rattle, not unlike a septuagenarian in the sack far past his sexual prime.
He’s baaaccckkkkk!!! Dirty
Beaches aka Alex Zhang Hungtai just announced that he’ll be releasing an
entirely instrumental double LP sometime this year.
As a preview, he released the
album’s title track, “Love Is the Devil,” and based on the single, the new
album will be even more moody, atmospheric, and heart-wrenchingly romantic than
his first.
Wong Kar Wai, hurry up and have
Dirty Beaches score your next movie already.
Entirely inappropriate for work and devilishly depraved, the
latest from The Neighbourhood
is loin swellingly good.
On the latest single from the California-based quintet,
darkly sexual beats mingle seductively with 80’s synths and ruinously alluring
vocals. Jesse Rutherford croons with the promise of utter annihilation, “Touch
me, I want you to touch me there” and “Make me feel like I am breathing/Feel
like I am human.”
Once upon a time, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were a no name band
that travelled the Williamsburg
circuit making a splash with their outrageous shows. Karen O would hop on stage
wearing nothing but a bikini bottom and some tape over her nipples, and proceed
to get into tussles with broken glass.
Fast forward to 2013 at Glasslands Gallery and it is clear
that that brand of thrashing, brutal minimalism is alive and kicking in Hunters.
With hardly a word to the audience, the Brooklyn quartet proceeded
to roar through their set.
Consisting entirely of punishing two-minute riot inducing anthems,
Hunters perforated the ear drums of the audience with a fine frenzy of noise. Without
fail, Derek Watson and his dreadlocked coiff kicked off each track with savage
guitar attacks and leering vocals before engaging in a feisty vocal fire fight
with his partner in crime Isabel Almeida.
As the two traded shots, innocent bystanders were
indiscriminately sprayed with their sneering petulance, and as the set wore on
the vocal exchanges escalated into a kicking and shoving match that ultimately
ended in a scuffle on the floor that resembled the tangled chaos of Custer’s
Last Stand with arms and legs splayed every which way.
An adept graduate with honors from both the Karen O School
of Mayhem and the Alison Mosshart School of Wicked Flailing, that hell cat she
devil Almeida radiated raw energy and sexual malice, creating that brand of
terrified arousal that swallows you whole and spits out your bones. As my
friend eloquently put it, she’s “nymphomaniacal.”
Needless to say, their post punk garage rock left the
audience breathing hard, charged with sexual energy, and ready to light some
shit on fire.
For a sample of the mayhem, have a gander at the video
below, courtesy of DeathMirror365 (although, i can't vouch for the audio quality).
Taken at last year's show at Glasslands, with significantly better audio quality.
Sydney Indie-rock duo the New Brutalists stir up some
entirely unwholesome emotions with their brand of bracing snarling surf rock
meets sugary sweet double claps. Think The Cramps collide with the Beach Boys with a she-devil
sex kitten on vocals. 100% pure uncut calamity, just like it should be.
The world always needs more dark wave dance floor bangers,
and fortunately for us, Brandy
Kills has dropped their latest single, “Undressed” from their new album Dead Love Songs.
Like Depeche Mode mainlining China White, “Undressed” is
dark, moody, and loaded with 80’s synths.
Stream and download available below or head to bandcamp for the full album.
Don’t let the suits and meticulously combed coifs in their press
photos fool you, The Vernons are four
very, very bad Aussies who make some serious blues rock that has been infected with 60’s-pop and gospel. Think of an Australian version of The Greenhornes.
Stream their latest single, the rollicking barn burner “Honey,”
below along with “Eliza.”
Just some nice indie folk from the
so-adorable-it-makes-you-want-to-die Blessed Feathers.
If the he and she duo weren’t cute enough, while on stage at
the Turner Hall Ballroom in Wisconsin two weeks ago, Donivan Berube got down on
one knee and asked his lovely band mate, Jacquelyn Beaupre, to be his partner
in crime forever and ever. Isn’t that precious? Not that I’m jealous or
anything and it’s not like everyone I know including all of my ex-girlfriends
are getting married. I mean that’s totally not happening in my life right now. Seriously,
I’m fine! I’m totally okay with it. Fuck you Jenny! You cheating slut! Good
luck with your marriage!
Sorry, where was I? Oh right…in honor of their nuptials, okay
not really, the nice couple recently released a free download of “Holyoke/Springfield”
from their new-ish EP. Stream and download the track below.
Oh and for the record, Jenny, I always thought your elbows
were way too sharp.
Oh and in case you're curious, you can see the heart-warming moment between the two Blessed Feathers below, courtesy of Cream City Sound Check.
Here at Aesthetes Anonymous we’ve been chugging along at a
hard charging pace of late, courtesy of all the rollicking blues rock thrashers
that have been endlessly screaming through our speakers, so the gorgeous folk
of Melbourne’s Brighter
Later is a welcome change of pace.
Their debut single “The Woods” is the brainchild of the
multi-talented Jaye Kranz and features the magical serenity of an enchanted
forest. Like the mythical creatures of the woods, Kranz exudes an alluring cool
and that quiet intimacy found only in the early hours of the morning. Throw in
some jazzy riffs, beautiful chants, and some lushly textured soundscapes, and
you’ve got some serious indie folk. While others have frequently likened Brighter
Later to “Beach House gone folk,” for some reason I keep hearing Art of Noise’s
“Moments in Love” playing endlessly in my head.
Have a listen below and be sure to check out their debut
album, The Wolves, which is expected
to drop early this year.
If you haven’t already heard the psychedelic Americana of Tin Sparrow, then
get ready to trip hard.
Like a horse-back ride through the blazing deserts of New
Mexico, while completely blitzed on acid, Tin Sparrow combines the best of barn-burning,
foot stomping folk with jangling 60s-tinted harmonies and hallucinogenic synths
in a tie-dyed kaleidoscopic swirl.
Think
Edward Sharpe with less jangle and more southern twang or the unhinged insanity
of Jodorowsky’s surrealist Spaghetti Western El Topo.
While it seems like everybody and their mother is
experimenting with vintage synths and ethereal vocals, LA’s White Blush aka Carol Rhyu is a
welcome addition to the ever-widening realm of moody dream pop.
On her debut self-titled EP, a dense fog of 80’s-tastic
synths, lurking malice, and pulsing rhythms coalesce around her sultry whisper to
form a distant vision of a cold Blade Runner-esque world. Particular standouts include the darkly
danceable “Juice of My Heart,” the swirling “Mirror,” and “Jolene,” which pays
homage to Dolly Parton’s classic.
If Wild Nothing, Chromatics, and Exitmusic are your jam, you’ll
definitely want to have ear sex with the White Blush EP. Stream it below or
head over to bandcamp to snag
your copy.
2012 was a big year for Memphis-based psychedelic rockers Tiger High, with the quartet dropping
two absurdly good albums. While their debut album Myth Is This was fantastic, the band opted for a far more
punishing and brutal sound on their second album – think less Sgt. Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts Club Band amiable tripping and more full blown vicious dinosaur-faced-orangutans-swinging-from-chandeliers-Hunter-S.-Thompson-acid-melt-down.
But there’s no need to fret, Tiger High’s brand of
Southern garage rock, buzzy vocals, scorching guitars, and fuzzy psychedelics
will have you dancing with your perverse visions rather than shrieking in
terror.
Stream and download the fantastic single “Be the Indian,”
from Catacombs After Party, and be
sure to also check out the Velvet Underground-inspired projector party music
video.
Let's kick the year off right with the twisted, deranged, and primal garage rock of Australia’s The Cairos, who know
a thing or two about making some serious sweaty back room thrashers. Despite their brazen swagger and their bone crunching guitar riffs, these four knaves find
the time to harmonize on some 60’s-tinted vocals. While that may sound a bit
odd, it works perfectly in this case.
Stream the single below and be sure to head over to their bandcamp for
more.
